resources. Available GIS resources are listed below.
These resources are only available to UNC-CH affiliates (faculty, staff,
and students) unless otherwise noted.

GIS Computing Resources
Resource:
ITS Classrooms and Labs
Locations: Davis Library, Hinton James Residence Hall,
Law School Library, R.B. House Undergraduate Library, School of Public Health,
Student Union, and Venable

Assistance/Staff: The labs are staffed, but staff members may
not be trained in GIS.

Davis Library Geographic Information Systems
Location: Davis Library Reference
Hours: GIS Machines are available when
Davis Library is Open. Printing is available when the Reference Desk is staffed.
Equipment: 4 PCs specifically for GIS use, Color Printer (size up to 11x17),
Black/White Printer, Plotter: Hewlett Packard Design Jet Plotter 1055 CM, 36" wide
(Please see our plotter policy ).

Resource: Odum Institute GIS Lab
Location: GIS Lab Manning Hall, Room 016
Hours:Monday - Thursday, 9am - 9pm, Friday, 9am - 5pm
Equipment: 12 machines specifically for GIS use, a Digitizing Tablet,
a Color Printer (size up to 11x17), Black/White Printer, Server with 1 terabyte of disk space.
Assistance/Staff: Experienced GIS staff are on hand at times.

Resource: Geography Computer Lab
Location: 319 Saunders Hall
Hours: Lab is available when a TA is present and no classes
are scheduled.
Equipment: Seven computers are available with GIS and Remote
Sensing Software Installed.
Assistance/Staff: When lab is open, TAs are present to
answer questions.
**This resource is for UNC Chapel Hill Geography Students only**
Resource: Health Sciences Library Media Design Studios
Location: Health Sciences Library, 2nd Floor
Hours: The Media Design Studios are available when
the library is open.
Equipment: There are two Media Design Studios in HSL, one with two PCs and one with two Macintosh machines. The Microsoft Media Design Studio has two computers with GIS installed.
Each machine has
two scanners connected to each computer. Each computer has a flopppy drive, a CD burner and a DVD drive. An HP inkjet printer
and a plotter are also available.

GIS Training Opportunities Online Training:
UNC Chapel Hill has a site license for ESRI products. Through this site license,
current UNC-CH affiliates (faculty, staff, and students) have free access to Online GIS
Training from ESRI's Virtual Campus. For a listing of free courses, and information

Instructor
Led Training:
Campus GIS Training opportunities are advertised on the uncgis electronic discussion list.
This list provides a medium for the dissemination of GIS-related information including pertinent colloquia,
job and training opportunities, etc. To become a member of this list, go to
the
UNC-CH Mailing Lists Page and subscribe.
The University Library offers
customized GIS classes for small groups and courses.
Contact Amanda Henley to inquire about a class.
The Odum
Institute offers short courses on GIS. For more information, check The
Odum Institute Home Page and sign up to the
uncgis mailing list.
The University
also offers for-credit courses that incorporate GIS. These courses are available
in several departments. The Geography Department has a
Graduate Certificate Program in Geographic Information Sciences.
Speak with your advisor if you are interested.
Books
and Online Documentation:
Through the University's site license with ESRI, UNC Chapel Hill affiliates have online
access to ESRI software documentation, tutorials, and books. These resources are password
protected- use your onyen
when prompted for a password. A list of the available documentation is linked to from
an ITS Help Page. Additionally, ESRI has made
their software documentation available on their support website - The ESRI support website is available to everyone.
The University Libraries collect books and materials pertaining to GIS. Search the
Library Catalog.
Walk in patrons not affiliated with UNC Chapel Hill are welcome to use
this resource; NC residents with a valid Borrower's Card may check out books.

source of information. Search the knowledge base, user forums, or
arcscripts - someone in the GIS community
may have created a tool that can do exactly what you need. Search arcscripts for
downloadable tools and extensions (Free!). - The ESRI support website is available to everyone.
